E5309- Orissa Tribal Koraput Kotpad Raw Silk Shawl – Ganga Jamuna Border

Recently-made Orissa Tribal Shawl

From Koraput / Kotpad district

Hand loomed cotton.  Raw silk content.

Some undyed unbleached natural fibre in the field that allows the beauty of the variations in natural yarn colors to come through.

All other dyes are natural dyes.

Slubs of handspun yarn visible.

The longitudinal borders are of different colors – a feature known as “Ganga Jamuna” among weavers across the country

Fish moving in both directions – toward the maroon border as well as the brown border.

Absolutely gorgeous sober & elegant.

This is the preferred clothing of Sonia Gandhi – the ex-leader of the Congress Party and can be seen in most of her public appearances.

The tribe is small, the production is very limited and it is not possible to walk into a store and find these textiles. These can be acquired only in state or NGO sponsored exhibitions when the tribes people come out to sell a batch that has been produced over the previous few months. The weaves are sold in the metro cities 2-3 times a year direct to the handloom-loving elite of India.

This is not old – made post 2000.

Acquired  to help out the weavers.

60 x 210cm

[MUST BE DRYCLEANED]
