654 Old Wedding Odhana Shawl Rajasthan Indian textile Art – MASTERPIECE

 MASTERPIECE

March of the Peacocks!

33″ x 74″

An amazing example of creativity! In this category of textiles we usually see the same set of angular geometric motifs repeated across individual pieces of textiles. Rarely do we see any unusual individualistic element. This is my first exposure to a peacock in a Rajasthan Shawl. What makes me wonder, is the fact that the execution is not random nor is it rendered in the ‘we’ll figure it out along the way’. The artist knew exactly what she was doing in every single stitch, with it’s directions and size preplanned before she even began. She created the entire flock with the precision of a well-practiced master. Where did the peacocks and maybe the artist originate from? Did she belong to some other tribe and did she bring with her these migratory memes? A fascinating textile!

The base cloth is old and fragile and in need of tender loving care.
