We believed that life is one continuous stream of events from which we draw happiness.
What if it was never meant to be a continuous stream? What if it was only ever meant to be discrete packets of joy delivered to us through various events, various people and various things across time?
For joys often come as specific events or experiences that deliver intense sentiment. We then encapsulate these distinct experiences into memories and immortalise them in our minds. And when we revisit them at a later date, we re-experience the sentiment again.
Within that capsule, we give it all we’ve got and get out all we can.
These events are like shooting star – full of fire that burns into the soul.
Bright and intense, but also transient and impermanent.
If we are lucky, we will have frequent and long phases of life in which we are free to pursue shooting-stars and fill up our memories with treasures!
The difference between people and how each of our lives turns out different lies in the statement “we give it all we’ve got”. Some have more risk aversion than others and are inclined to be less adventurous than others. Some play as goalkeepers protecting their goal posts and others play centre forward. To each his own!
But when the stories of our lives are written, may we each have countless stories to recollect and enjoy when we lay down alone in our hospital beds someday.
