Festival Time – Mumbai Style

This week it’s Janmashtami that the city celebrates – the birth of Lord Krishna.

Baby Krishna loved home-made butter and he’d help himself to all the butter pots in the neighbourhood.

To recreate that, in Maharashtra & Konkan belt, pots are suspended high up on the streets. Tolis or teams of men come along with a festive mood, create human pyramids and climb up to the pot to claim the treasure inside. Onlookers encourage them with singing and throwing buckets of water on them. It usually rains during the the monsoon anyway!

This video came to me on whatsapp – adding it here so that it reaches more.
