Art in Architecture – Tanjore Temple

Traveling again.

Gaining experiences.

Learning more.

Feeling more.

And hoping to share them all here.

Contrary to intuition, on this trip I learnt that the time spent on an event is not proportional to the amount one can extract from the experience.

Neither the intensity nor the quality of the experience are linked to the duration of the event in my opinion.

A little green chilli can bring out more reaction* than a whole loaf of bread….

[*To many people chilli implies something unpleasant but to me, it is the queen of all tastes and life would be completely bland, boring and unbearable without it – so it is with this in mind that I have used the above anaology]

And so it was with my short 3 day trip to the 1000 year-old temple town of Thanjavur or Tanjore.

The stay was sufficient for the magnificence of the ‘punya-bhoomi’ or pure-land to reveal itself.

And it was sufficient for parts of me to reveal themselves. Parts I did not expect to find within me.

After all isn’t that what life is about? An inward journey of discovering oneself?

Before I get lost in the abstract here are a few photos of the temple from which I drew a lot… perhaps they will transmit the beauty:

They say, one makes it to the big temples of India, only when they call out to you.

Maybe they do. But maybe my senses are not tuned to hearing the call.

And yet, I have been fortunate to make it to the big Shiva temples that people wait for a lifetime to visit….

Maybe it is just a result of a random travel choice. Or maybe there is some skew & bias …

Either way, I am happy to go with the flow and enjoy the beauty of the art & culture.

And through that journey, the discovery of the science within these spiritual constructs and concepts is WOWing me!
