Notes on Culture & Antique Art, Ethnic Decor & Vintage Fashion | Wovensouls Art Gallery
Immersive exposure and study of the 29 white-base phulkaris led to certain observations.
Supplemented by readings of published material (Cooney (2019), Hershman (1981) and Ibbetson (1939)) led to the formation of a hypothesis.
To determine the plausibility of this hypothesis fieldwork was conducted in 8 towns in Punjab with senior ladies in 2019.
The findings of this exploratory study – termed “breakthrough” by a collector-client who is a well-traveled public figure – have been presented with love and respect for the people and traditions of Punjab of that era.

Very interesting as usual, Jaina – superb work and conclusions. I guess there may be a parallel with some of those ‘Sindhi’ abochinis. Also, I saw a recent Hali that had a short piece by Karun Thakar – like you, questioning some of the ‘category names’ used nowadays for phulkari ‘groups’ like sainchi.
Brilliant!
Thank you Steve! I know that you have a superb collection and that makes your comments even more valuable!
