When the ‘Negative’ is Desirable

When the NEGATIVE is desirable…

An Amli masterpiece on pashm wool. Negative spaces or spaces in which there is no silk embroidery were used to create a variety of motifs.

The artist must have needed to be mindful at 3 levels.

a) The micro stitches that must be laid out, with an eye on the colors, the position, the size and angle of the stitch.

b) the pattern being created by the stitches – the petals, the tendrils, the leaves and
c) the macro negative spaces that must be left empty with precision without a single wayward stitch extending into that negative space.

And the fact that this was done across every stitch (that is less than 1mm) across all of the 2 square meters is mind-boggling!

Made in Kashmir, 1800s

Let the applause begin!

Although the creator(s)  will never hear us rave about this, the universe will.

So let’s bow in awe and gratitude to those who put out such beauty for the rest of the world to enjoy!

From the WOVENSOULS collection but not on display yet.
