Tattoos with Soul

Once upon a boat ride in Phi Phi, I stumbled into the world of real Tai tattoos … full of inscriptions and magical figures.

THIS is the tattoo art that the rest of us try to copy!

We can copy the figures …

But the soul of the real thing is simply uncapturable!

Young Mr. Noo of Phi Phi Island proudly displays his tattoos that gave meaning in every motif. We did not share a language so I could not find out more, but similar ones may be seen in the book on Tai Spirit Cloths that I posted a few months ago.

I am always somewhat bemused by people who get tattoos from cultures other than their own.

I got mine too as a “tribal – wannabe” copying some of the gorgeous Rabari Tattoos…. these tattoos do a lot but I always feel something’s missing …..
    Don’t know what I was expecting!! 🙂
