Notes on Antique Textiles, Folk Art & Timeless Traditions – Jaina Mishra

The Weight of Art

As I was measuring this skirt worn by petite young girls, I had to do a double-take.

I had just written down 130 inches – that was twice as tall as me – so simply not possible!

Upon checking a second time it was the same… 130 inches of cloth!!

Not light diaphanous fabric but thick coarse handwoven cotton that weighed a few pounds.

And yet those girls, petite and pretty, carry the weight of traditional costumes so effortlessly!
