Wood Art

Over the years in Singapore with its old world charm inherited from Chinese ancestors, I’ve seen wood artworks made out of a variety of woods: Huang Huali, Rosewood, Cherry Wood, Camphor wood and the extremely heavy Ironwood.

Even the table I sit at is made of old Jichimu or Chicken Wing Wood which will be impossible to find in the future.

The artistry lies in slicing the wood and creating visuals of the grain that are appealing.

But beyond this basic first-cut, the art of wood work was taken to a higher plane in ancient China, one that might be unparalleled anywhere else in the world.

Some examples of wood art – in huang hua li wood sit atop the furniture.
