Notes on Culture & Antique Art, Ethnic Decor & Vintage Fashion | Wovensouls Art Gallery
The unparalleled art in the architecture seen in the Havelis of Jaisalmer mesmerizes and leaves the visitor speechless. The spell cast by the beauty of the walls built with stone is a soothing spell as the soul loses itself in the cool aura of the ancient stones and the mind wanders off into the past – attempting to ‘feel’ the fulfillment of the occupants of these houses and the creators of this stunning beauty.
The heat of the world outside is forgotten. The water-bottle that I forgot in the autorickshaw and the parched throat are forgotten as the vision is flooded with incomparable beauty. Strangely, this flood does nothing to quench the thirst of the eyes and spirit – this flood only fuels it – making me want to absorb it all in a single instant – making me want to run through the building, absorbing every single wall and every single carving at once. Controlling this craving is excruciating. If only my feet would keep pace with my mind and my soul. If only the burdens of bags & body did not exist – then my soul could have flown through the building through the little wind-holes, touch the ceilings, and wrap itself around the stunning pillars! If only!
But trapped in a human body, I move through the Havelis, slowly, trying very hard to view and then to memorise every detail that my eyes can see. Sadly eyes forget.
Thankfully, the camera captures it all.
A few images of the beautiful Havelis of Jaisalmer:
Surprisingly a large number of the Havelis belonged to traders and not to royalty as one might expect!
One more thing to covet!
