Umaid Bhavan Palace Museum – Paintings

Paintings are all two-dimensional and we view them in the plane that is perpendicular to the plane in which both our eyes lie.

So if a painting is mounted on a wall we face the wall directly and view the painting. But what if we were to stand at a 45 degree angle to the wall?

This idea has been exploited in creating paintings that when viewed from 3 different angles result in 3 different images. Vertical blinds that have been used as a device to create this effect. Each blind is painted upon with a splice of the image and together they form the complete portrait. In a single frame therefore, portraits of 3 people can be seen.

(These were behind glass so the pictures do no do justice to the paintings but will suffice to convey the idea)
