Newari Wood Art

I am ashamed now of my ignorance of that entire Himalayan region that houses a rainbow spectrum of historic cultures – that have left so many pieces of art & craft to for us to enjoy wistfully today.

There are puppets and masks and metal artefacts and stone artefacts and textile arts and word craft  and and and…

Here I am presenting just the windows of newari origin – found in Patan, Bhaktapur and Kathmandu. There’s much more than windows out there – balustrades, doors….

The Newar community is particularly known for producing these special arts and sculptures made from wood. The tradition of woodcarving in Nepal goes back to the 12th century, and the carvers have achieved great skill by passing secrets from generation to generation and acquiring and sharing new techniques. The ancient cities of Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur have incredible wooden buildings, temples, and palaces that are decorated with elaborately-carved wooden windows and panels. The palace in Basantapur is decorated with beautiful and grand wood carving, and excellent examples of wood carving can also be seen in the inner courtyard of the Kumari ghar (house). Most of the wood carvings in Patan date back to the 17th and 18th centuries, and some are “younger” as many temples damaged during the earthquake of 1934 had to be restored

So if you are planning to travel to Nepal – do keep an eye open for all the fabulous woodwork around you!
