The Newar community is particularly known for producing these special arts and sculptures made from wood. The tradition of woodcarving in Nepal goes back to the 12th century, and the carvers have achieved great skill by passing secrets from generation to generation and acquiring and sharing new techniques. The ancient cities of Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur have incredible wooden buildings, temples, and palaces that are decorated with elaborately-carved wooden windows and panels. The palace in Basantapur is decorated with beautiful and grand wood carving, and excellent examples of wood carving can also be seen in the inner courtyard of the Kumari ghar (house). Most of the wood carvings in Patan date back to the 17th and 18th centuries, and some are “younger” as many temples damaged during the earthquake of 1934 had to be restored
