1700 Rare Namawali Block Printed Assamese Gamchaa

Repeated Inscription of the Hindu Chant

“Hare Ram Hare Ram Ram Ram Hare Hare

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare”

In Assam gamuchas depicting inscriptions with Vaishnavite mantra in Assami script were used to display spirituality.

Note the Vaishnav symbols in the border.

This hand-block printed gamcha is not common outside the region.

The script may be Bengali or Assamese.

Features depictions of Krishna with Radha

Age unknown but estimated to be post 2000.

The inscribed chant was popular with the ISKCON movement in the ’60s and ’70s.

Loosely woven cotton.
