The Flow of Ganga – A lesson learnt

When one thinks of the Ganga, one thinks of serenity and calmness and peace.

But the form that the river takes in Haridwar is anything but that.

She is more like the high-energy high-speed, unstoppable force that gushed onto the earth and needed someone as powerful as Shiva to keep her from being destructive.

In Haridwar I felt her force.

You can feel her fierce spirit in the videos.

When I came here as a 3 year old child, she swept away a little glass I was holding and I cried for a day. She had no mercy on even a 3-year old.

Yet years later I am drawn back.

My room overlooks the waters.

After dusk I watch from my window that is just a meter away from her and watching the continuous unstoppable movement exhausts me. I fall asleep by her side watching her intense flow.

When I wake up, she still hasn’t slowed down, going on and on and on. In all my days there, she didn’t stop for a moment of rest.

The intense speed of the Churchgate-fast trains in Mumbai that I love so much – pales in contrast.

This force here is at another level. Like a lightning bolt – except that this one lasts forever.

Here are some videos that will show what I mean:

Ganga Evenings 1

Ganga Evenings 2

Ganga Evenings 3

Ganga Evenings 4

When I next think of Ganga it will be as something fierce – a Life force – hurtling past – like time itself – making us chase it – no lapses allowed – no errors allowed.

Lesson: I cannot chase a moment after it has passed by – either I seize it like the coconut-man seized the bounty – or – lose it forever. [The story of the coconut man coming up next].
