Sentinels & Thresholds
The threshold is a very important line in a traditional Indian home.
It is washed and decorated beautifully every day with auspicious symbols drawn in powder by the woman of the house.
As a child I thoroughly enjoyed the feeling of importance when I was granted the right to decorate it on days when everyone else was very busy.
As is the case with all elements of culture, the character of the permanent fixtures on the threshold differed across the states.

I would be very glad to know is you made any notes about these artefacts. I’m especially keen to know more about those in your third illustration.
Actually – there are probably no notes as I have not yet learnt to leave extra time for the museum and am always running to board the flight. (The museum is after check-in and immigration – visible only to passengers & not in the visitor area). So will try and check it out on my next airport stop. Apologies…

So I checked all my photos and I do normally take pictures of any text boards with explanations – but there are none in my set. Then, two days ago I was at the same airport again, around other exhibits and confirmed that there are no explanatory notes put up near each of the exhibits…. I guess the details will remain a mystery to us!
