Antique Java Topeng Masks and Wayang Topeng

Wayang Topeng is an Indonesian dance form that uses masks such as the ones shown below, that evolved in the 16th century.

Performances enact Javanese stories about 12th century heroes like Prince Panji  or stories from the Mahabharat and Ramayana.

These antique masks from the early 20th century are permanent exhibits in the Asian Civilisations Museum, Singapore.

Performances may be seen even today in Solo city / Jogyakarta that is also home to the buddhist heritage structure Borobudur.
