1441 Antique Bali Silk Songket with Ramayana Zari Weaving

An intriguing silk Songket weaving from Bali with Ramayan scene woven in Zari and multicolored silk floss.

The scene has been interpreted to depict Sita – wife of Lord Rama – with Trijata in the Ashoka Vatika after being abducted and brought to Lanka by Ravana. 

In Bali Hindu spirituality pervades not just every day life but also most forms of art and Wayang puppet performances narrate the various sections of the epic Ramayana even today.

The purpose of this textile is not known.

Condition is 2/5  – there are several small holes and weak spots in the silk.
