1057 Antique Dragon Yao Shaman Robe with Silk Floss Embroidery

This shaman dragon robe has the traditional elements.

We find the Three Pure Ones at the top of the back who oversee the Daoist pantheon along with other immortals and saints. There are also auspicious beasts such as the phoenix and qilin.

This robe is the creation of the ethnic Cao Lan.

For a very similar item, refer to the book “How to Make the Universe Right: The Art of the Shaman from Vietnam and Southern China,” p. 151-170 by Dr. Trian Nguyen to see similar examples.

Early 20th Century.

35 x 37 inches.

Signs of heavy usage present in terms of fading, stains, thread losses, fraying & holes. Yet, fortunately, the art & cultural stories embedded within remain intact!
